A postcard from Grantown

I’d noticed that one of the postcards we have framed at Strathallan was looking a little lopsided and while trying to move it back into place it fell to the floor to reveal a holiday message, sent by a couple who had holidayed here in Grantown. It was postmarked 1935.

George V of England can be clearly seen on the stamp and was issued one year before his death.  Also in that year, Allen Lane founded Penguin Books, the company I used to work for before coming to Grantown to run Strathallan Guest House.

It had been sent by a couple who had ‘been for a drive to Grantown and went for a little walk’ they had then decided that they ‘were going to stay Monday’ in the town. It is easy to forget that Grantown on Spey has been a little cosy hub for tourists for many years. Like the couple who penned this delightful postcard to their friends in Cornwall, we have had many guests arrive at Strathallan Guest House for one night and end up staying for two or three because they loved this little town. Though visitors have been drawn here a lot earlier because of one special woman…

The town first became a popular holiday spot when Queen Victoria visited in 1860. Stating that during her stay in the town she had enjoyed ‘excellent porridge’ and had marvelled at the beauty of the landscape. After this visit, people wanted to follow in her footsteps, coming here to discover the wilds of Scotland, while still being able to stay in comfortable lodgings.

Of course you can stay here to visit castles, distilleries, historic sights, take adventurous walks, view nature and much more. But have a little walk around Grantown and you will notice the historic buildings everywhere. So, while you stay with us, don’t forget to visit our wonderful museum and learn about this amazing wee town founded in 1766. The Grantown Museum is offering talks and tours too, so why not pop in and learn about our history. You should also look out for the Grantown 250 celebrations taking place this year as well.  Oh, and don’t forget to send a postcard to your friends and tell them how much fun you are having!
