On the 10th October 2015 an event like no other will bring together porridge lovers from around the world. They will descend upon the lovely wee village of Carrbridge, to compete for the chance to be named World Porridge Making Champion at The Golden Spurtle Competition and take with them the much coveted Golden Spurtle.

If you think porridge making is easy then you haven’t been paying attention. This is no ‘oat so sloppy’ event, bunging dust into a bowl and microwaving for 2 minutes, this is serious porridge making prowess in action. The rules are clear and strict. You can only use pinhead oatmeal, water and salt. Step away from the milk, put down that spoon of sugar too.

This is exactly how we make our porridge at Strathallan Guest House, although our porridge does come with the option of adding your own dried fruits, maple syrup and Scottish cream too. We’ve even dropped a wee dram of whisky into it occasionally too.

This has left us thinking…should we enter the competition too?
